RE: Winterizing

Winterizing will be a MUST where you are. Any freeze with water in the lines can cause very costly broken water line breaks/hot water tank damage and significant loss of fun and money. RV antifreeze can be found at Walmarts/RV dealers/Fred Meyers and many other places. Be sure it is RV anntifreeze which is not dangerous. Auto antifreeze can be deadly, even in small amounts.
Now, once winterized............ YES you can use the rig. We do it often by simply carrying jugs of water for cooking, hand washing and even flushing. When we are done, I simply drain the tanks and add the pink RV antifreeze back into all the P-traps and some in the toilet to keep that seal moist. I put some antifreeze down the black tank to keep the solids that may remain from becoming cementlike.
Good luck but DO winterize all water lines!!

RE: Waking up from a nap ‘Grumpy’

Power naps refresh and renew my energy. Anything longer that 20 minutes and I am just not going to function cheerfully or think clearly until the next day. But 15 minutes.............. heavenly!

RE: What to expect when buying a RV

Often depends upon the type of RV what is considered normal but ANY battery required for basic operation should be included. As you price rigs and start to negotiate, ALWAYS spell out any "add-ons" you are expecting.......... spare tire, battery, propane filled, etc. Some kind of vent cover (Maxi Air or others) makes life so nice in rain as vents can be left open but protected) If they want your money, they will find a way to negotiate for those items or to include them.
Sometimes the sewer hoses they give you are of such low quality, you have to go out and buy new immediately anyway. Expect to have to purchase a 25' potable water hose(not a garden hose). I like 2 10' sewer hose segments with adapters on the ends, electric adapters differnt campground setups 30 to 20amp for instance. Hoses are rather small in cost in comparison- battery, vent covers installed!, full propane tanks, spare tire (if you have a place to put it) can really add up.
Good luck with your new RVing adventure. Whatever they give you, you will need to add something else! LOL

RE: Cost of Cancer

Nancy - so sorry they are kicking you while down. I also have been battling breast cancer although my road has been a little easier than yours. I have been thinking about you and hoping you were doing well. Your boss' total lack of empathy, notification IN ADVANCE of your leave expiration and the lack of human compassion is truly unbelieveable. Legal??? Maybe not. Check with the state!
Do not let this negative situation get you down, you need your focus and energy to battle this lousy disease. I am doing well and now have almost enough hair that I am beginning to consider removing the hats and going au natural. This has been a long haul but the support of the people around me has made all the difference.
You too will get past this rough patch and will come out the other side well and happy once again. HAng in there. I am so sorry you have this added stress and burden at the worst time. Hang in there and PM if you need to vent! Be well.

Dog diabetes

We have a little mini-schnauzer that has just been diagnosed with diabetes. She is to get insulin 2x per day, 12 hours apart so says the vial. Question is - doses ideally 12 hours apart, while working this is very difficult to manage. How critical is it that the doses be 12 hours apart. I will ask the vet when we go back but am struggling to trying to do this right............. And yes her food intake is being strictly monitored as we go through the startup then adjustment phase.

RE: Pet death question

Our little schnauzer became ill in Las Vegas of all places. We were referred to a WONDERFUL vet clinic not far from Circus Circus where we were parked. They tried and tried to help unitl we found out, via many tests and five days of worry, that she was in liver failure. We had no choice but to put her down. Vet had offered to show us how to keep her hyrdated to bring her home but she was suffering and the ending of the story would have been the same. So, amidst many tears, signed the euthanasia order, had her cremated and met her at home. Thank goodness for compassionate caregivers there who gave her every chance to get better.
Had never given a thought to what to do as she was still quite young. They guided us and assisted us through the tough times. Somehow, wherever you are, someone will help you if it is needed.

RE: roadside assistance comparison

Another happy camper with Coach Net. I LOVE that they have service techs available 24X7 via phone. Have had need of their service three times - 2x with RV and once with car. All times GREAT service including getting you an appointment at a repair facility when you call Coachnet with a need. Also, tow you to the nearest APPROPRIATE repair facility, not just the closest town.
May you never need their service and good luck with your choice.

RE: winter camping

You may find yourself pretty coolish inside. Some Rvs tend to be not well insulated and drafty, double pane windows help a LOT. Be careful with electric heaters around all the plastic pipes and bay parts. Using your gas furnace is what heats the bays if you acquire a rig with heated bays. Some models even have heat pads under the water tanks to keep them from freezing. You will have to insulate and/or heat tape your water supply hose (or fill your tank and live off that and refill...) and I wonder about the parks standpipe freezing at the temps they get. Had an unimsulated one freeze when temps dipped down barely below freezing. Best of luck with the winter adventure.

RE: Seattle Campsite

Not many choices near Seattle and NONE in Seattle. Lake Pleasant in Bothell is likely the best for you. Issaquah just east of Seattle has a couple of parks but they are right off the freeway with lots of traffic noise and pretty much concrete parking lots. Kent KOA is just south of Seattle, some have stated they feel uncomfortable there and not sure if they can handle your larger rig. Also pretty much concrete. Good luck - great city just no RV parks. Wish we had more choices for you.

RE: Fast Food....I remember some of these.......

Older than dirt............. how did that happen?? First phone
CH33154. I remember the first transistor radio I got- tangerine orange from Sears and was the envy of all my friends because it was so much better than the crystal radios we had used. Amazing strides in new technology in our older than dirt life-times: now common place - computers, TVs, cellphones, Satelite TV, man on the moon/space travel, supersonic commercial flight (come and gone), self-contained motorized RVs!! and the list goes on and on.
Sometimes I do yearn for those old days when you knew your neighbors and it was safe to go just about anywhere, anytime. Oh yeah, and gas was $.25 per gallon and we thought that was highway robbery!!

RE: Be careful out there

So glad you are OK. I had a close call just this last weekend - following a small pickup with furniture, obviously moving. Had a bookcase unit on top on the back of the load. Didn't look right to me although I could see the rope holding it on. Heard that little voice inside say, don't trust this. Moved over and backed off and not thirty seconds laters, BAM!! Fell off and splintered all over into lane cartwheeling LARGE pieces that barely missed several of us at windshield heighth. Checked out my ability to survive a blood pressure spike for sure! Sure hope no one behind was hurt.
PLEASE double check and secure any load you are moving and watch out for those that don't.

RE: To those I have offended, I apologize

Walter, always enjoy reading your posts. The problem with postings is that we cannot hear the inflection/intent and read into the words what we THINK was meant. Even the spoken word can be misinterpreted. I appreciate this post setting the record straight for any of us here that might have mis-interpreted your words. All is well.

RE: Baring your soul on RV.NET???

I never read the Ford VS Chevy posts by CHOICE and no one is required to read any post. Simply do not open a post with a topic that you will find not to your liking. Likewise I don't read about Trailers since I don't have one, not a Snowbird yet, and on the list could go........... Some areas I read faithfully as they interest me.
Sometimes people need a safe place to "land", to be able to vent, to find release or simply to be reassured they are not alone in a given situation. Compassion and caring is an important part of this forum for some folks, for others not their style. Some deal in nuts and bolts and some in emotions. Ok, pass on unwanted posts. All is good.
Seems simple to me.

RE: Slide covers, are they a must?

Living in rainy and sometimes breezy Washington I have had slide toppers now on two different RVs. Love them and have only had one occasion where small sized fir tree debris got under the slide topper. I simply used a broom to scoot it off. Debris and water on the slide topper are simply rolled towards and then over the edge as you retract the slide and as the awning rolls under. A nice feature I would not be without.

RE: Plugging in and water heater questions

Welcome to the confusing world of RV electric - I too was newbie challenged in this area when we started. Had a Jayco RV and loved it. Check you owners manual as I believe you will find a chart of your appliances and how many amps each uses.
At home or anywhere needing an adapter to plug in, you will only have 15 or 20 Amps. Plugging straight into the campground pedastal with no adapter gives you 30 amps. You should NOT run the AC even though you maybe can when using an adapter- low power does damage to the motor and will cause early failure of the AC.
Anything that produces heat or cold uses the most amps. We could not use our AC and the microwave together, would trip a circuit breaker. We learned after a while, what we could use together. Hair dryers, elec coffee pots and elec hot water heater are also big users of elec. Often we simply turned off the AC for a few minutes, do what we need and turn it back on (will have a two minute recycle time on the AC compressor likely so don't panic when you try to turn it back on immediately and nothing happens, it will.)
I did run the frig at home on elec with an adapter and it worked fine. Propane seems to cool things down much faster though. I would turn the frig on the night before departure and was ready to be loaded in the AM.
Read up on surge protectors and think about getting a quality one to protect to entire trailer. Not cheap but neither are all the electronics and appliances............ Happy travels.

RE: Hawaii Tour advise

Years ago I took my two teenage sons to Hawaii. Rented a car and drove all over the island, stopping when we wanted to. I asked the hotel staff, locals we ran onto and had read travel books before we went to find the things we wanted to see and do. Had a grand time and was low stress. Tours can be great but I prefer the freedom to pull over when we see something of interest. Good luck whatever you decide to do, you will have a super trip!!

RE: I'm RICH.............!!!

Mandrake, you are a wise man who appreciates what makes one's life rich. "Things" are not what count most but relationships are. Having made mistakes and conquered, (haven't we all??) you are a great example of someone who has learned to appreciate the gifts you now have.
Treasure every day you have and those special people around you, folks.

RE: College football - week 2

Washington State Cougar here. OMG! We have had a poor record most years but this may set a new all time low for a season. New coach, lots of underclassmen. 2 big losses in a row now. Yesterday set a new all time low - score was 66 CAl to 3 WSU, a new record against. Nothing about the game was pretty.
Opening play of the game from the scrimmage line, CAL weny 80 yards UNTOUCHED. WSU gets the ball, interception on the Cougs 30, touchdown CAL. 1:30 seconds gone on the clock in the first quarter. I had to turn the TV off. So the WSU mantra of "this is a building year" will be repeated many times. Pummeled in Pullman....................
